This page shows one possible way to set up the firmware to write characters to the display. Based on the pin connections and the actual display segment map from the previous slide, the memory array location of the associated segment can be defined. In this particular example, the A segment will be controlled by the bit 4 position. Likewise, the B segment is controlled by the bit 5 position. All of these bit mappings are derived based on the way the LCD controller and the display are connected. To simplify generating the characters, an array of the values can be used to turn on all of the segments required to create the complete character. In the last example, the number 0 was created which used all of the outer segments A through F and ORing these in this example provides the value 0xE070. Then the 0 index is written into the array to send the data representing the alphanumeric character 0.
