Microchip LED drivers are grouped into three families: the first group is drivers with an internal power supply with internal current sinks, representing the low-power segment, for example notebooks and industrial panels. The next group is external power supply with internal current sinks, also aimed at low-power products with the need of many LED strings, for example backlight TVs and monitors. External power supply with external current sinks is the final group. This is the high-power category, for example general lighting with many LEDs per string, thus the high voltage requirement.
