MK31 Series SMD Reed Sensor for Low-Power Applications

Standex-Meder Electronics' ultraminiature SMD reed sensors offer powerful performance in a tiny package

Image of Standex-Meder Electronics' MK31 Series SMD Reed SensorStandex-Meder Electronics offers the MK31 series of ultraminiature surface-mount reed sensors, measuring only 6.4 mm x 1.95 mm x 2.2 mm (LxHxW). Though it is small, this sensor packs a powerful performance. It can switch a minimum of 50 million reliable operations. With the current push towards smaller electronic designs, both performance and size are paramount. Performance in reed switch technology refers to both physical durability and switching life. Reed switch technology has a reputation for being high quality. In contrast, mechanical switches have a history of early failures due to worn parts and/or environmental contaminants.

In addition to its long switching life, this tiny sensor is physically robust. It has no wearing parts and is environmentally rugged inside and out. Inside this sensor is a hermetically sealed reed switch. On the outside, the reed switch is over-molded with an extremely durable thermoset plastic. It’s smooth, flat surface and J-lead design make it highly suitable for automatic PCB placement. It also comes in convenient tape-and-reel packaging.

The MK31 series SMD reed sensor uses no external power in its normally open state. This is especially important as power efficiency has become more demanding in today’s electronics.

The MK31 sensors' compact size, physical durability, and low-power properties make it the ideal solution in low-power and space-limited applications. These applications include battery-driven and portable devices. Applications in major markets like medical, consumer electronics, metering, and security are just a few examples of where the MK31 is a good fit.
