DigiKey, the global distribution leader of electronic components and automation products, announced the launch of its first electronics design contest in Japan, “DigiKey Make ONE Challenge 2026 – Take on Your Own 'Best' Creation,” to foster the next generation of engineers and promote a culture of innovation in electronics design.

The contest, accepting submissions through June 22, 2026, encourages engineers, developers and students to celebrate the spirit and challenge of making and creating. Whether it’s a first attempt, a first project of the year or a personal best, the design contest celebrates “ONE” starting point for the next inventive creation.

To encourage student participation and provide practical learning opportunities in electronics and embedded systems, DigiKey will also award a special student prize. In addition, the company is providing support for component purchases through its “Maker Support Campaign,” which runs through April 26 and makes it easier for anyone to participate.

“Through this contest, DigiKey aims to strengthen its role as a partner supporting engineers, students and makers throughout their development process – from idea generation to design, prototyping and real-world implementation,” said David Sandys, senior director of technical enablement & engagement for DigiKey. “We enjoy helping to foster the next generation of engineers while promoting a culture of innovation in electronics design.”

Contest sponsor NXP Semiconductors is also featuring three evaluation boards for edge AI, wireless IoT, embedded Linux and real-time control as part of the contest. Entries using NXP products will receive bonus points in the first round of judging. The NXP boards address a wide range of challenges across skill levels, from beginner prototyping to advanced development by experienced engineers.

The top 10 entries will advance to the final round. Ichiken, a popular electronics DIY YouTuber will join as a special judge and the final four winning electronics projects will be exhibited at Maker Faire Tokyo 2026, Sept. 5–6, and widely promoted on DigiKey Japan Official YouTube Channel through winner interview videos with Ichiken.
